Red Tangent Records
Red Tangent Records: Our post-release work is enhanced by our ‘lived experience record label’ - Red Tangent Records.
We established Red Tangent in 2021, thanks to seed funding from the National Lottery and in partnership with a group of former participants, who proposed the vision for this enterprise.
Red Tangent takes our mission further. Co-run with ‘lived experience leaders’, it supports talented musicians who've been in the system to develop their professional work and careers. It's a response to systemic barriers, promoting cultural equity and positive pathways.
In 2023, Red Tangent established a Young Artist Strand of the label. This reflects an intention to focus support on talented young music artists who’ve had contact with the criminal justice system and face multiple barriers to accessing the music industry. Funding from the Lightbulb Trust and Youth Music has enabled us to do this work. Here’s what some of our young artists say about their work with the label so far:
“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to be treated as a professional in the music industry, and feel like we are really working towards greatness for everyone involved! Ryan at Red Tangent Records has pushed me to be a better person and has given me something to work on that is actually legitimate and can support me and my future family's life, steering me away from that dark path that clouds over mine and family’s past. Without Ryan, I don’t know where or what direction my life would be in. And I can’t thank him, or Red Tangent Records enough for their continuous support of me and my dream.”
We know from our work with artists over the past year that this industry-focused support can help open doors. Through our trauma-informed approach, tailored opportunities and access support, we want to help level the playing field and enrich the music industry with more diverse talent.
Going forward, Red Tangent Records will continue to focus its resources and support on talented music artists and producers who’ve been involved in the system or who are on the edges of it, helping to redirect pathways in a positive direction.
